I think a lot of people know how to do it if the window platform exist on corporate environment and the authentication mechanism need to be built. Maybe it will be good choice because never need to spend the money or time for surveying another product! Of course, there is more and more open source or free software supply the same function. That is another good choice as well.
After installing Windows Server 2008 R2 with hotfix up-to-date, I need to promote one machine to play an Domain Controller for preparing my lab environment. When you execute a command "dcpromo" in prompt console, the Active Directory Domain Services Installation Wizard will show up.
- Enable "Use advanced mode installation" check box next to click "Next > " button
- A message will remind you the security difference between now and before version and compatible problem if your environment still exist the previous operation system. Due to it is my first new DC and doesn't exist the previous DC, I will directly click "Next > " button to go into the next step.
- Select "Create a new domain in new forest" option next to click "Next > " button
- Key in "FQDN of the forest root domain" as Adatum.com next to click "Next > " button
- Key in "Domain NetBIOS name" as ADATUM next to click "Next > " button
- Select Windows Server 2008 R2 as "Forest functional level" next to click "Next > " button
- Enable "DNS Server" check box because I want this DC play DNS role as well.
- Due to it is my first DNS role and never need to be integrated with any existing DNS, please click "Yes" to ignore this message.
- Confirm whether need to change the default path as "Database folder", "Log files folder", and "SYSVOL folder". If you agree, click "Next > " button directly.
- Key in a password for using Directory Service Restore Mode in the future next to click "Next > "button.
- Click "Export settings" button
- Select a safe location to save this file
- The process will begin to install or configure the related DC necessity.
- Finally, the Active Directory Domain Services Installation Wizard will be completed.
- And you have to restart it now to let DC function take effect. otherwise, it still is a generic windows platform if never restart after promote it firstly.
